Every tent guide you have read compares tents two ways. How much they cost, and how many guests fit. Both are accurate. Both tell you almost nothing about what your wedding will actually look like.
Here is the question nobody answers. What does the tent do to your flowers?
A tent is not a neutral box. It is a giant light filter, and it is a structure that either can or cannot carry weight above your guests’ heads. We know this because we design under these tents. We do not rent them. Life In Bloom has designed under sailcloth on Lake Michigan, under a black atrium tent on the North Shore, and under frame tents from New Buffalo, Michigan to Kohler, Wisconsin.
Four things change your design: the fabric and the light it makes, the frame and what it can hang, the ceiling height, and the poles. This is a tented wedding guide organized by design outcome, not by price sheet.

Wedding Tent Types at a Glance
There are five wedding tent types you will realistically be offered in the Chicago area. Here is what each one does, and what it costs you in design terms.

The tent most couples picture first is sailcloth, and it deserves the longest look.
Sailcloth Tent Weddings: The Warmest Light You Can Get
A sailcloth tent is a translucent fabric tent supported by wooden center poles. It gives you the warmest, softest light of any tent you can choose, which is exactly why it photographs the way it does at sunset.
The light is the whole story here. Because the fabric is translucent, daylight passes through it and spreads instead of glaring. There are no hard shadows and no hot spots. At golden hour the entire ceiling turns amber and the light comes down on your guests from every direction at once.
What that does to flowers is specific, and worth knowing before you choose a palette. Blush, peach, terracotta, cream, and copper glow under sailcloth. Those tones were made for this light. Cool colors soften, so a sharp lavender or an icy blue will read gentler than it does in your inspiration photos. Pure white flowers pick up a warm cast and read ivory rather than bright white. That is not a flaw. But if you want crisp true white, know it going in and we will build the palette differently.
Now the rigging reality, in plain language. Sailcloth uses wooden poles and a fabric roof, so it carries less overhead weight than a metal frame structure. Lighter suspended work is very achievable. Heavy chandeliers and dense hanging gardens need to be planned with the tent company early, not decided the week of. When suspended work is engineered from the beginning, it can be remarkable. Sailcloth also belongs near water. The soft peaks and wooden poles suit a shoreline the way no metal frame does, which is clear in a sailcloth tent wedding on Lake Michigan at Shoreacres in Lake Bluff. On the North Shore, with open water behind the tent, the whole structure reads as part of the landscape.
Then there are the poles. Sailcloth almost always has interior center poles, and the couples who are happiest with their tent are the ones who stopped fighting them. Plan the ceremony aisle and the head table around them, or wrap and light them so they become part of the design. A decorated pole is a feature. An ignored pole is an obstacle in your photos.
One Chicago summer note. Sailcloth breathes better than solid vinyl, but an open sided tent in July still needs airflow planning. Fresh blooms wilt faster than guests do, and they wilt quietly.
If sailcloth is the warm and romantic option, the atrium tent is the modern and moody one.
Atrium Tent Weddings: Drama, Sky Views, and Serious Rigging
An atrium tent uses clear roof panels framed by a strong metal structure. That combination gives you open sky above your guests and a frame that can genuinely carry weight.
The light story is the opposite of sailcloth. Clear panels give you true daylight color, so your flowers read exactly as they do in the studio with no warm cast and no correction. Whites stay white. Then the sun goes down, the roof visually disappears, and you are dining under the night sky. This is the tent for couples who want the sky to be part of the design rather than something they gave up.
A black frame changes everything again. It turns the structure itself into a design element, frames the view like a window, and makes candlelight and warm uplighting pop against a dark ceiling line. The practical headline is rigging strength. That metal frame is the reason chandeliers, dense suspended greenery, and heavier floral installations are actually on the table. Ceiling height comes with a rule attached, though. Tall structures make short centerpieces look lost, so scale up or the tables will read empty from across the room.
Now the honest part. Clear panels create a greenhouse effect in direct sun, and fresh flowers feel it fast. Cooling, install timing, and shade planning matter more under an atrium than under almost any other structure. We plan installation hours around the sun, not around convenience.

Clear Span Tents
A clear span tent has no interior poles at all. The entire floor is open, which makes it the most flexible structure available for both your floor plan and your hanging design.
It also offers the strongest rigging of the group. If you want a full suspended installation running the length of the room, or a ceremony aisle with nothing interrupting the view, this is the structure that allows it.
The tradeoff is real. With solid white sides and roof, the light goes flat and even, and the space can feel like an empty hall. A clear span tent wedding rewards ambitious design and punishes minimal design. An open structure needs a plan behind it, which is worth understanding before you commit, and it is a good reason to read about working with a luxury wedding florist.
Arcum Tents

An arcum tent uses curved arched legs instead of straight walls, so you get a softer, rounded ceiling line with no center poles.
The arch does design work for you. It creates a natural sweep overhead that suits draping and greenery following the curve, which means you can achieve a finished ceiling with less material than a flat span would demand.
Watch out for the geometry. The arch sets your ceiling line, so installations should follow that curve rather than fight it. Plan shapes that agree with the structure.
Century Tents
A century tent has tall dramatic center peaks supported by poles, giving you real height on a smaller footprint.
Height is the selling point. Those peaks create vertical drama that a flat roof tent simply cannot produce, and they do it without requiring a larger footprint.
Watch out for the poles. They sit in the middle of your floor plan, so decorate them, wrap them, light them, and build the seating chart around them from the first draft.
Choosing the tent is the easy part. Seeing it before the day is the hard part.
How We Design Under a Tent, Starting With a 3D Rendering
A hotel ballroom already looks like something. A tent starts as an empty field. That is exactly why you should not have to imagine it.
A tent is an empty field until you can see it.
Before your wedding day, you see a photorealistic 3D rendering of your design inside your actual tent. Ceiling height, pole placement, installation scale, table layout, and lighting all get resolved on a screen instead of on the morning of. That is where you discover the centerpieces are too short for the ceiling, or that the center pole lands precisely where the head table was going.

We deliberately limit how many events we take per season and per weekend. Tented weddings are built from nothing on site, and that limit is what makes this level of attention possible. Tented Wedding Questions We Get Asked Most
Do I need a tent for an outdoor wedding?
If your reception is outdoors, yes, plan for one. Chicago weather changes fast, and a tent protects your guests, your lighting, and your flowers. Even in perfect conditions, a tent gives you something to hang and light from, which an open lawn cannot.
How big of a tent do I need for a 150 person wedding?
Ask in terms of what has to fit, not square footage. You are planning for seated tables, a dance floor, a bar, a band or stage, and service space. Ask your tent company for a floor plan that includes every element, because guest count alone routinely undersizes a tent.
Are wedding tents air conditioned?
Yes, tents can be climate controlled, and in a Chicago July you should assume you need it. Cooling protects your guests and your fresh flowers, especially under clear panels where sun builds heat quickly.
How do you decorate a tent for a wedding?
Start with the ceiling, because it is the largest surface and the one guests notice. Then layer lighting, work with the poles instead of around them, and scale centerpieces to the ceiling height.
