Design Process

a look at our

As a boutique event design firm, we intentionally limit the number of events that we take on in both a season and even a given weekend. We do this to ensure that we continue to offer the greatest value to each of our clients through the use of thoughtful and creative design.

Part of our unique design process is the use of 3D renderings to convey how we plan to transform your venue. We find this process allows us to look critically at our own work prior to execution and additionally, it ensures that everyone is on the same page before the big day so that there are no surprises!

Led By a Sculptor

Our creative direction comes from Vince Phan, who began his career in New York and holds a masters in sculptural arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. That training shapes how we approach a room: we think in structure, volume and material before we think in stems. It is why our installations are engineered rather than arranged, and why we build so much of our own work in the studio.

Absolutely!  While there may be some additional fees, we love the opportunity to make your day beautiful no matter where you are getting married! From a massive tent wedding at Riverbend in Kohler, WI to a Black-Tie wedding at the legendary Kansas City Country Club. And From a gorgeous Spring wedding at The St Louis Art Museum to a Fall wedding overlooking the Manhattan skyline from The historic Domino Sugar Factory, we've designed and produced events across the United States.

Will Life In Bloom travel to produce my event outside of Chicago?

We design the full range of large-scale floral installations that transform venues rather than simply decorate them. Our installation work includes: suspended floral clouds and chandelier installations, floral arches and ceremony backdrops, flower walls and photo backdrops, chuppah and mandap designs, ground meadow installations (flowers arranged at aisle level for a "walking through a garden" effect), column and structural wraps, and custom entrance installations. We've designed dramatic installations at venues across Chicago — from historic ballrooms to industrial lofts to lakefront rooftops. Every installation is engineered for your venue's specific rigging points and dimensions, and we conduct site visits for complex builds. If you can imagine it, we can likely build it.

What types of floral installations does Life In Bloom create?

Yes — always. We would never simply hand off your florals and leave. For every event, Life In Bloom manages the full lifecycle: professional delivery to your venue on your timeline, careful installation and setup of every arrangement, coordination with your planner and venue team to ensure everything is placed correctly, and post-event breakdown (strike) to collect our vessels, mechanics, and materials.  A typical Life In Bloom event has over 20 crew members involved in set-up and breakdown. Everything is handled — your only job is to enjoy your wedding day.

Do you handle delivery, setup, and breakdown on the event day?

Our consultations are creative discovery sessions, not sales meetings. We'll ask about your venue, your overall aesthetic, your color instincts, and — most importantly — how you want your wedding day to feel. Bring anything that inspires you: Pinterest boards, magazine clippings, fabric swatches, or just descriptive words. We'll walk through every floral touchpoint of your day, from your bouquet to your reception centerpieces, and begin sketching a cohesive design vision together. From there, we develop a detailed proposal with our recommendations, bloom selections, and investment breakdown. Consultations are by appointment. We recommend booking us 10–14 months before your wedding date — especially for peak season dates from May through October — as our calendar fills quickly.

What should I expect during a floral design consultation with Life In Bloom?

Absolutely — and we consider it one of our specialties. Life In Bloom has designed florals for South Asian weddings (including mandap décor, garland work, and mehndi florals), Indian weddings at iconic venues like the Chicago Cultural Center, Jewish ceremonies with chuppah installations, and Greek, Italian, and multicultural celebrations. Every cultural wedding carries its own symbolism, traditions, and aesthetic language — and we take time before every consultation to understand what those mean to you. Whether you want to honor a tradition completely or blend two cultures into one cohesive design, we'll bring that vision to life with curiosity, respect, and artistry.

Do you design florals for cultural and religious weddings?

Winter is one of our favorite seasons to design — the palette gets dramatically beautiful. For Chicago winter weddings, we love working with hellebores (also called the "winter rose"), white and blush anemones with their striking dark centers, ranunculus in deep cream and mauve, amaryllis for grand trumpet-shaped drama, and garden roses in ivory, dusty rose, and burgundy. Evergreen foliage — cedar, pine, magnolia leaf, and eucalyptus — adds structure and seasonal richness that fresh spring blooms can't replicate.  We also incorporate textural accents like silver brunia, hypericum berries, and dried botanicals. Because Chicago winters limit locally grown options, we work with premium importers to source the freshest blooms available. The result: arrangements that feel deeply seasonal and intentional, never generic.

What flowers work best for Chicago winter weddings?

Due to the level of attention and level of design that we invest into our events, our decor services begin at $40,000 for events in November-April and $50,000 for events in May-October.   "Decor" refers to various decorative elements used to enhance the ambiance of a venue. This includes items like flowers, lighting, drapery, furniture, bars, decorative backdrops, chairs, linens, tabletop rentals, etc.

What is Life In Bloom's Minimum?

Full-service wedding floral design means we handle every floral and décor element from concept to cleanup — so you never think about logistics on your wedding day. At Life In Bloom, full-service includes: an in-depth design consultation and custom mood board, sourcing and conditioning of premium blooms, all personal florals (bridal bouquet, bridesmaid bouquets, boutonnieres, corsages), ceremony installations (arches, chuppahs, aisle décor, altar arrangements), reception décor (centerpieces, floral chandeliers, custom bars and band backdrops), day-of delivery and professional setup at your venue, and post-event breakdown and strike. We coordinate directly with your planner and venue to ensure seamless execution. Full-service is ideal for couples who want a cohesive, elevated design — not just flowers dropped off in boxes.

What does full-service wedding floral design include?

Choosing the right Chicago wedding florist starts with three things: portfolio alignment, communication style, and trust. First, review the florist's body of work — does their aesthetic match your vision? Look for range: can they do intimate and grand?  Second, pay attention to how they communicate in consultations. Do they ask about you — your story, your venue, your feeling — or do they jump straight to packages? At Life In Bloom, we begin every relationship with a deep-dive consultation to understand not just what you want your wedding to look like, but how you want it to feel. Third, book early. Chicago's top wedding florists — especially those doing full-service design — typically book 9–14 months out, particularly for peak season (May through October). We recommend reaching out as soon as your venue is secured.

How do I choose the right wedding florist in Chicago?

Life In Bloom is Chicago's premier boutique wedding florist and event design company — and what sets us apart is the full scope of what we do. We're not just a florist. We explore your entire vision, from floral arrangements to décor installations, and craft a cohesive experience that transforms your venue into something extraordinary.  What started as a petite floral design shop over a decade ago has grown into one of the most influential event design voices in the Chicagoland market, featured in Brides, Vogue, and Over The Moon.  Our work spans intimate elopements to grand ballroom galas. Every client receives a deeply personalized, bespoke design — we don't do cookie-cutter. We do intentional and unforgettable.

What makes Life In Bloom different from other Chicago wedding florists?

We take on all special events. While Life In Bloom began as a wedding florist over a decade ago, we now work as a full-service event design company across weddings, galas, corporate events, milestone celebrations and private parties — from intimate elopements to grand ballroom galas. The design approach is the same regardless of occasion: we start with how you want the room to feel, then build the floral and décor program around it. Our capabilities include floral installations, suspended décor, ceremony and stage design, tablescapes, custom furniture bars, lighting, drapery and linens. Life In Bloom is a WBENC-certified women-owned business, and we produce events nationally as well as throughout Chicago.

Does Life In Bloom design corporate events, galas and other special events, or only weddings?
